_____________
In the early 20th century, Historic First Ward was a mix of working-class residences and industrial sites, including warehouses and storage facilities. Construction on the 75,000 square foot warehouse was completed in 1928 for the Houston Transfer Company, and became the long-time home of Harris Moving & Storage. Located between two active rail lines, for over half a century the structure served a vital role in Houston’s industrial landscape.
In 2004, The Deal Company purchased the property and began converting raw warehouse into studio spaces. Already occupied by an informal artist collective, Jon Deal collaborated with city officials to formally establish the site as a creative space. In 2005, Winter Street Studios became the first building in Houston to be officially designated as ‘Art Studios’ by the City of Houston.
Since opening, Winter Street Studios has been the cornerstone of what is now Sawyer Yards—the largest creative campus in the nation. Twenty years later, it continues to thrive as a dynamic hub for local artists, fostering creativity and community engagement through exhibitions, events, and open studios.
It remains an essential part of Houston’s flourishing art scene.
