Curator Statement:

Narratives at Play features new and recent artworks by three Texas-based artists: Vincent Fink, Stephanie Gonzalez, and Calvin Pressley. Through surrealist imagery and abstraction, there is a sense of human nature and our connection to the natural and subconscious world pervading through each of the artists’ works. Whether it be through an intuitive process or mathematical planning, there is an essence of play and exploration inviting viewers to re-interpret the works with their own sense of curiosity.

Artist Statements:

Vincent Fink

I intend to share my thoughts, dreams, and nightmares to help elevate the human condition and understanding of oneself as part of the collective. My primary medium is subconsciousness on consciousness. The Atlas Metamorphosis is my manifesto and Iterations are my patterns for refining an ever-adapting interpretation of the world. My work is multidisciplinary and multidimensional as I expand from two-dimensional detailed perspective drawings of Atlas and Iterations of Sacred Geometry surrealism paintings into three- and four-dimensional installations that reveal an uncanny glimpse of our corporal reality using a vast array of light, sculptural and temporal media. In the name of art as exploration, I am not limited to any one medium. Rather, my work is conceptual. Building on consistent themes and concepts that question our place in history and reality. No matter what branch of my artistic studies, I consider myself a Surrealist. It is always my intent to interact with the viewer on a subconscious and metaphysical level, be it lucid, or in waking life.

Stephanie Gonzalez

I consider the act of creating my nature. An act of expression based on intuition. Growing up I felt a sense of disconnect from the world and the people around me. Visual art paved the way for me to express things that I could not express verbally. My work is a collection of personal experiences transcribed into layers of paint and mixed media, coded into whatever substrate I can find. Each piece can be considered a journal entry to my life experiences on this earth. I have always found a sense of place in nature and creating art. I believe nature and art are the same things.

Calvin Pressley

As an oil painter and drawer of mixed-media, I find myself continually inspired by the play of light and color on the surface of my canvases. Recently, I’ve turned my focus to exploring the intricate patterns and hues of various bird as a visual starting point. There’s something truly captivating about the way these creatures seem to shimmer and glow in the natural light. I’ve been exploring ways to capture that effect in my work. My birds often come from my world. Though I draw from the techniques and approaches of artists who’ve made a name for themselves since the growth of contemporary painting, my ultimate goal is to create pieces that are approachable, thought-provoking, and visually appealing. I love to see viewers who are drawn into their vivid colors and dynamic surfaces. With a Master’s degree from America’s oldest art school under my belt, I’m constantly experimenting with new techniques and approaches, pushing myself to create work that is both informed and intuitive.
