I had the honor of being approached by the Houston Heights Association to create a temporary outdoor sculpture for their 7th iteration of True North.
True North 2020, a Heights Boulevard sculpture project, is a temporary public art installation organized by an all-volunteer team, along with the Houston Heights Association (“HHA”)—its nonprofit sponsor and long-time custodian of Heights Boulevard’s esplanade—and in cooperation with Houston Parks and Recreation and Houston Public Works. The official opening of the sculpture project is March 15, 2020, and sculptures remain in place through December 15, 2020.
True North 2020 is comprised of extraordinary and diverse works by distinguished Texas artists Leticia Bajuyo, Bill Davenport, Vincent Fink, Jack Gron, Joseph Havel, Jack Massing, Sherry Owens/Art Shirer (collaborating), and the late Bob “Daddy-O” Wade whose design for the project was realized by long-time friend and Austin artist, Will Larson. The sculpture project is co-curated by Linda Eyles, Simon Eyles, Chris Silkwood and Kelly Simmons, and Gus Kopriva of Redbud Gallery is its engineering and project consultant. For more about True North visit their website.
The project is getting a lot of press so far, and will in the months to come. I was happy to see that a random trip during the Covid-19 lockdown resulted in being printed in the Houston Chronicle:
Caption reads: Vincent Fink puts lights in his artwork Monday as part of the Heights Boulevard sculpture project “True North 2020,” a temporary public art installation by an all-volunteer team.
“You could call this an artist in self-quarantine,” Fink said.
Also got to see this and the other sculptures on the Fox26 evening news.
(see the shortened clip)
Also a piece on this sculpture and my Artist Self Quarantines at PaperCity Magazine has been released.
I documented the process of installation and invite you to enjoy. You’ve got time for it! And just in case, I made 3 versions. Each timed for your level of attention span and dedication:
